The design on the reverse was by British artist Percy Metcalfe. The coin is part of Ireland's decimal currency which was superseded by the Euro, with new coins and notes being introduced in 2002. Metcalfe's design for the reverse was retained from the pre-decimal coins.
Physical Description
A round nickel coin (18 mm diameter) featuring on the obverse a 16 string Irish harp modelled on the 'Brian Boru' harp in Trinity College Dublin; around, Saorstat Eireann (Irish Free State, in Irish), the date divided either side of the harp; and an Irish hare seated facing left on the reverse with the denomination 3d and artist's initials in the exergue; around, 'leat Reul'.
