One of 35 black and white Lantern Slides depicting images of places and people taken in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district in Bavaria, Germany, circa 1920s. This slide depicts a man on a wooden sled with the bib suggesting he is competing in a race.
Sleds were first used by Vikings about 800BC, with the first international sled competition being held in 1883 in Davos, Switzerland with an Australian student and Swiss mailman tying for first place. In 1913 the Internationaler Schlittensportverband (International Sled Sport Federation) was founded by Austria, Germany and Switzerland in Dresden, Germany, with the first European Championships being held the following year in Reichenberg.
