In the 1920s there were ski jumping hills on Kochelberg, Gudiberg and Hausberg, which all surrounded the towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen. Since 1921 the Ski-Club Partenkirchen has hosted a New Year's ski jumping competition. The ski jump on Gudiberg was modernized in 1933 for the 1936 Winter Olympics, with the first competition on the new hill on 5 February 1934 drawing a crowd of about 5,000 spectators.
