Significance
Ascension Island was discovered by the Portuguese on Ascension Day (40 days after Easter) 1501 but was not settled until the British arrived in 1815. It played a role as a coaling and fuelling depot for steam ships and early transatlantic flights respectively. The coins of Ascension Island are primarily struck for collectors. Circulating on the Island are coins struck for St. Helena and Ascension. This was the first of the collector issues.
