Other Details: Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals. Mount Franklin is an extinct volcano 11km north-east of Daylesford and north-west of Melbourne. Gold mining began in the area in the early 1850s. The Shire of Mount Franklin was proclaimed on 27 January 1871. In the latter decades of the 19th century, when this medal was issued, the fresh air and the picturesque scenery at Mount Franklin had begun to attract visitors to the Shire.
