Other Details: Queen Victoria's 50th jubilee in 1887 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. This medal was one of many issued by local governments to commemorate the occasion. This medal was issued by the Shire of Prahran. Prahran was originally surveyed for farm allotments, with land sales in 1840 and 1849-50. During the 1870s the Prahran municipality's population had grown by 50%. By 1879 a rail line from Melbourne to Gippsland also traversed Prahran, and cable trams began to run in Toorak Road and Chapel Street the year after this medal was issued.
