Other Details: Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals. This medal was commissioned by the City of Fitzroy. Interestingly, Fitzroy did not formally become a City until 1913. The names Alexander Fenfrew as Mayor. He was elected Mayor in 1895, 1896 and 1897, retiring in August 1898. His address was listed as Brunswick St, Fitzroy.
Obverse Description
Conjoined head of Victoria of 1837 and veiled bust of Victoria of 1897; around, QUEEN VICTORIA'S 60TH. YEAR OF REIGN * 1837 TO 1897 *;
Reverse Description
At centre within broad rim arms supported by lion and greyhound below small Royal Arms; the shield of the main arms has a diagonal line through it from bottom left to top right; the motto on the ribbon seems to be poorle entered, it reads, ET DECUS ET PRETIIM REGT. Around edge: CITY OF FITZROY / ALEXR. RENFREW, MAYOR.
