Glass plate negative portrait of Jean and Edythe Ellison Harvie, commonly known as Ellison, with their cousins Donald, Kenneth and Malcolm Harvie in a garden.
Malcolm Harvie, seated on Ellison Harvie's lap, was born on 16th May 1908, and would probably have been between 1 and 2 years old. Ellison would probably have been around 7 years old; Jean, 5 years old; Donald, 6 years old; and Kenneth, 4 years old. It is thought that this photograph was taken by Ellison and Jean's father, studio photographer, Robert Harvie. Donald, Kenneth and Malcolm were the sons of D'Arcy Thomas Harvie, Robert Harvie's younger brother.
Robert William Harvie was a professional photographer who, with his business partner Albert Sutcliffe, owned a photography studio named Harvie & Sutcliffe between 1898 and 1908, located in the Cromwell Buildings, 366a Bourke Street, corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Streets, Melbourne.
The Harvie Collection includes examples of Robert Harvie's private and professional photographic practice. A number of the photographs depict the family life of four generations of the Harvie family, including the Lang family.
The Harvie and Lang families had social significance in Melbourne through their active involvement in early Australian vegetarian movements, early moving film, photography and architecture, as well as various other cultural societies and clubs in Melbourne.
Description of Content
A portrait of five young children, two girls and three boys, seated and standing in a garden. The two girls are seated on chairs with the girl on the right, holding a male toddler on her lap. The other two boys stand behind the seated girls. Both girls wear long sleeved collared dresses and the girl on the left, has a bow in her hair. One of the standing boys appears to be wearing darkly coloured shorts and a lightly coloured jacket with a large collar. In the background there are trees and bushes.

Originally the image was assigned an estimated date range circa 1920s-1940s, however, further research into the relative ages of Ellison, Jean, Donald, Kenneth and Malcolm indicate that this photograph was taken circa 1909. During this period Ellison and Jean lived at 4 The Terrace, Malvern however it is unclear at which address this photograph was taken. -
