Significance
The Battle of Montenotte was fought on 12 April 1796 between the French Army of Italy under Napoleon Bonaparte (his first command) and an Austrian army under Count Eugène-Guillaume Argenteau. It was fought near the village of Cairo Montenotte, in northwestern Italy, and ended in a French victory.
