People boarding an Avro X aeroplane belonging to Australian National Airways at Essendon airfield. ANA operated the first regular scheduled air service between Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania in 1931-32. The airline was established by Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm. ANA ceased operations in 1932 following the loss of the 'Southern Cloud' in March 1931 and the general effect of the Depression.
