Known as 'Sefton' house, the property was built by Lord Willian Lawrence Baillieu in 1905 to serve as a summer holiday home. The original English-style grounds were influenced by the asethetic of the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens directors Baron Ferdinand von Mueller and W.R. Guilfoyle
