Summary
Photograph of a woman wearing the uniform of a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse's apron and veil, with a red cross on an armband, apparently taken at Nareen, Victoria. Although the photograph was dated to 1905, the Australian branch of the Red Cross (which facilitated the VAD program) was only established in 1914, so the photograph is unlikely to date from 1905, and is more likely to have been taken during World War I. According to Goodman (1991), VADs had to provide their own uniforms, and none was paid.
