Summary
The 'gypsy' stereotype has been historically one of an exotic and romantic nomadic free spirit, dancing and telling fortunes, but dangerous, untrustworthy and sexually promiscuous. The word 'gypsy' can be seen as a cultural stereotype and a derogatory slur. Such words and sentiments are not condoned by Museums Victoria which considers them to be racist. Historical distance and context do not excuse or erase this fact.
