Description of Content
A passenger & mail coach drawn by a 4 or 5 horse team paused on the narrow Karangahake Gorge Road, near Waihi, in the Coromandel Region of the North Island, in New Zealand. On the left is a sheer rock cliff face of the road cutting and on the right a safety fence constructed from recycled lengths of iron or steel tramway or light railways rails as posts (staunchions) with two sawn timber railings attached, protecting vehicle and pedestrians from a steep drop down to the Ohinemuri River below. A woman in a long black dress holding a baby or small child is standing on the roadway between the coach and the cliff face. The driver and four male passengers are seated on outside seats at the front of the coach, wihile two other men are on the coach roof, possibly adjusting or securing the luggage.
