Other Details: Medals of the 1883 Amsterdam exhibition were all struck in bronze, the level of the prize was stamped on the reverse, in this case " D'ARGENT" . A number of Victorian wineries entered this Exhibiton, following on from the 1882 Bordeaux. Strachan does not have a Bordeaux medal, it may have been lost or he may have entered Amsterdam after hearing of the great success other Victorian wineries had had there.

Physical Description

A medal struck in bronze (69 mm diameter), stamped as the silver prize medal of the Amsterdam 1883 Exhibition. It features a head of Willem III and a personification of Amsterdam, laureate and seated among clouds, crowning a Victor with a laurel wreath and holding a trumpet; the winner holds a torch and extends left hand to goods exhibited.

Head of William III left above shields etc.; around WILLEM III KONING DER NEDERLANDEN HOOGE BESCHERMHEER VAN DE TENTOONSTELLING; below in small letters the srtist's name, A. FISCH; incuse on ribbon which flows behind shields, JE MAINTIENDRA AMSTERDAM

Reverse Description
