Other Details: This County of Bendigo Agricultural and Horticultural Society silver prize medal was awarded to Thomas Strachan in 1878 for red wine. The Society was established in 1859. It aimed to promote farming practices and celebrate rural achievements. It has conducted an Annual Show every year since that time, with the exception of the War years.
A silver prize medal (38 mm diameter) won by Thomas Strachan for an exhibition red wine at the 1878 Bendigo Agricultural and Horticultural Society show. It features the Arms of Bendigo with horse and bull supporters and the motto PROGRESS and details of the award.

Thomas Strachan was a prolific medal-winner at the County of Bendigo Agricultural and Horticultural Society. His medals included: bronze medal for excellence in wine in 1878 [NU 32246]; silver medal for red wine in 1878 [NU 32240]; silver medal for excellence in wine in 1878 [NU 32241]; silver medal for jams and jellies in 1879 [NU 32242]; bronze prize for for bottled fruit in 1879 [NU 32243]; and bronze medal for dried fruit in 1883 [NU 32244].

This needs to be checked, Altmann did use the Melbourne Mint at this time, but could they strike such a large medal before 1880?.
