The Morkalla railway line in the Millewa region of north-western Victoria, opened in sections. From Red Cliffs to Karawinna in 1923, Werrimull in 1924, Meringur in 1925 and Morkalla in 1931. The line ceased its passenger service in June 1939 and was closed to all traffic in 1988.
Thurla Railway Station on the Morkalla railway line opened for goods traffic in 1923 and for passengers in 1924. Victorian Railways Passenger Time Tables indicate that Thurla Station was classified as a 'No-one-in-charge' station. Thurla Station was supervised by a Station Master from Redclifs and closed to all traffic 7 Dec 1953.
Despite being a no-one-in-charge station, the woman in the photo was identified as a 'Station Mistress' by the donor of the photograph.
