Other Details: This seems to be one of a series of samples entered by Stokes & Martin for the proposed 1873 International Exhibition medals. The 1873 International Exhibition was held in London 14 April - 31 October 1873. It was preceeded by a Victorian Exhibiton held in Melbourne 6 November 1872 - 8 January 1873. Vienna also hosted an international exhibition 1 May - 1 November 1873.

Physical Description

An unissued specimen silver prize medal of the 1873 exhibition. It features a female representing the Colony of Victoria standing three quarters left before rural and industrial scene; around, INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION * 1873 *; in exergue, DITISSIMA TERRA , the artist's name J.HOGARTH FEC. and the designers name O.R. CAMPBELL DES.

Significance

Julius Hogarth moved from Sydney to Melbourne to work for Stokes and Martin. The company was awarded the commission for the 1873 Victoria International Exhibition medals. The medal was designed by O.R. Campbell, who later collaborated with Hogarth on the fine Melbourne-Philadelphia Exhibition medal of 1876. -Sharples, John P. 1990.
