Australia
Historical Medal Society of Australia & New Zealand
1970 (AD)
Mint: K.G. Luke

Other Details: Medal issued by the Historical Medal Society of Australia and New Zealand in honour of the Apollo XI moon landing. It names Neil Armstrong, naval aviator, test pilot and astronaut. In 1969 Armstrong was commander of Apollo 11, the first piloted lunar landing mission, and gained the distinction of being the first person to land on the Moon and to step on its surface. The Historical Medal Society of Australia and New Zealand (HMSANZ) was one of several medal-issuing organisations in New Zealand in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Society never formally met, and distributed a monthly journal, Historica, in lieu of meetings. Its main purpose was apparently to issue and market commemorative medals.
