Summary
Australian Scouting Jamboree, Frankston, Victoria, 1934-35 (AD)
Mint: Stokes & Sons
One of the major events of the Centenary celebrations of 1934-35 was the Australian Scouting Jamboree, held in Frankston between 27 December 1934 and 13 January 1935. This medal was struck as a memento of the event. The obverse shows the bust of Lord Baden-Powell in a scouting uniform with the legend 'LORD BADEN POWELL WORLD'S CHIEF SCOUT'. This was the first Australian Pan-Pacific Jamboree, the first international gathering of Scouts outside Europe and the only Australian Jamboree attended by Lord Baden-Powell. The Jamboree was held on 280 acres south of Frankston, offering heath land, wooded hills and gullies, undulating terrain and ready access to the beach. Its elevated position provided panoramic views of the sea and mountains. Around 12,000 Scouts attended the Jamboree, and by the end of New Year's Day 62,000 visitors had passed through the gates. Cubs, Guides and Brownies also shared the experience. The Jamboree claimed to be 'not only one of the most successful, but one of the most inspiring of all Centenary celebrations' (The Jamboree in Australia, Frankston District Scouts web site http://www.yican.com.au/1935/).
