Description of Content
A Victorian Railways mobile steam crane lifting the wreckage of a 16-ton capacity I-type 4-wheeled goods truck from a derailment near Wangaratta, about 1930. The crane is one of two 30-ton wrecking cranes built at the Victorian Railways Newport Workshops in 1911, to designs of Cowans Sheldon, Carlisle. The cranes were given Victorian Railways Nos. 5 & 7. Each crane had a 80 psi vertical steam boiler and a twin 8-inch x 14-inch cylinder winding engine, with a maximum load rating of 30 tons at 18-feet radius to 14 tons at 30-feet radius.

The photograph probably depicts the aftermath of a collision between a motor truck and goods train at the North Wangaratta level crossing on Friday 19 April 1935, which resulted in 14 goods waggons (trucks) being derailed requiring use of a steam crane and large gang of men to lift the waggons back onto the rails.
