Summary
Glass plate negative portrait of Mrs E.E. Osborne, possibly taken by Melbourne photographer, Robert Harvie.
It is unknown if the inscription '25.4.23' indicates the date 25 April 1923. If it does, this image was taken after the death of Melbourne photographer, Mr Robert Harvie, who died in 1922. Inscriptions on other glass negatives suggest that it might not be the date but perhaps a previous number used during the developing process. See MM 043413
Robert William Harvie was a professional photographer who, with his business partner Albert Sutcliffe, owned a photography studio named Harvie & Sutcliffe between 1898 and 1908, located in the Cromwell Buildings, 366a Bourke Street, corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Streets, Melbourne.
The Harvie Collection includes examples of Robert Harvie's private and professional photographic practice. A number of the photographs depict the family life of four generations of the Harvie family, including the Lang family.
The Harvie and Lang families had social significance in Melbourne through their active involvement in early Australian vegetarian movements, early moving film, photography and architecture, as well as various other cultural societies and clubs in Melbourne.

Place & Date Depicted
Australia, circa 1890 - 1920
The inscription '25.4.23' was previously thought to indicate the date 25 April 1923, however, glass negative MM 043413 has both the date 'Sep 2' and the number '26.4.23' as an inscription, therefore, '25.4.23' is thought to be a previous number used during the developing process rather than the date. Furthermore, Robert Harvie died in 1922 and therefore the date 25 April 1923 would be after his death. The photograph appears to have been taken in a studio and therefore may have been taken in Mr Harvie's photography studio, Harvie & Sutcliffe, located in the Cromwell Buildings, 366a Bourke Street, Melbourne, however it is unclear if the photograph was taken at this address. -
