Summary

"Valentine" portable typewriter, manufactured by Olivetti in 1969.

The Valentine is a portable typewriter, manufactured by Olivetti in 1969. It was designed by Ettore Sottsas and Perry King. It is described as being emblematic of quality in the exhibition (May 2003) on Sottsas and Olivetti in France. The use of colour in the design makes it very user-friendly - yellow knobs for winding the ribbon; the black keys stand out clearly against the shiny red/orange housing (plastic for lightness). A red/orange travel case provides protection. It is interesting, given the focus (2003) on portable communication devices, that this typewriter was advertised as being appropriate for the everyday world; some typewriters such as the Lettera 22 were advertise targeting the rich.

Physical Description
