Item HT 4675 Badge - U.S. Out of the Gulf, 1990

Summary

'U.S. Out of the Gulf' badge, alternatively known as a button, made in response to the Persian Gulf War of 1990-1991. The UN-sanctioned war was waged by 34 nations against Iraq. Iraq, under the rule of Saddam Hussein, had invaded Kuwait in 1990 and the war sought to remove Iraqi forces from Kuwait. The scarf of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) is featured on the badge, underlining an interpretation of the Persian Gulf War as a war against American interests. Many Palestinians had supported Hussein, seeing him as resisting the entreaties of America on the behalf of the Arab world. The War ended in 1991. The Iraqis left Kuwait but Hussein remained leader of Iraq.

Physical Description

This is a circular, plastic coated, metal badge in green, black and white. The text has been printed on the left hand side of the badge and to the right is a profile of an eagle that looks like a Shemagh (male, Arabic head dress). A metal pin is attached at the back.
