The Melbourne mint struck 238,990,000 coins for the introduction of decimal coinage on 14 February 1966. Although there was no formal mint mark, the products of the Melbourne, Perth and Canberra mints can be identified by comparison of the whiskers on the animals left. The Melbourne coins have the first whisker (nearest the rim) blunted; Perth coins have the second whisker blunted while Canberra pieces show no blunting.
Physical Description
An round bronze coin (17.5 mm diameter plain edged) featuring on the obverse a crowned head of Elizabeth II facing right, around, ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1966. The reverse features a feather-tail glider; the denomination numeral 1 is left of the head and the artist's initials SD below it's body.
