Summary

Hand made marionette depicting a blue bird with flapping wings. It was manufactured and operated in Melbourne by Alex and Murray Smith, who performed as part of Le Forgeron Marionettes from 1930 until 1956.

Physical Description

Marionette depicting a blue bird, which iis constructed from wood. It is painted a bright purplish- blue, with a white front, and yellow beak and legs. His wings, which have white painted detailing, have been attached to his body with pieces of leather. This forms a sort of hinge which enables the wings to flap. His feet are made from terracotta coloured leather, which have been nailed to his legs. The feet have been bent out of shape during storage. He has a real feather as his tail which is black, white and brown naturally and has been painted to match the body, yet most of the paint has faded. His eyes have been painted on. The blue bird hangs from a piece of wood.
