Summary

Hand made marionette depicting the fictional character of Pierrot the Clown. It was manufactured and operated in Melbourne by Alex and Murray Smith, who performed as part of Le Forgeron Marionettes from 1930 until 1956.

Physical Description

Marionette depicting the clown character Pierrot, who is wearing a jumpsuit with white ruffles at the collar and cuffs. It is made of a fabric with a triangular design in white, red, blue, green and navy. The outfit has been decorated with sequins. Around his waist Pierrot wears a blue, navy, terracotta and grey sash. He also has a line of sequins down his front. His white legs and black shoes have been painted on. There are some holes in his felt soles. Pierrot's face is in quite good condition with few cracks and chipping. His black hair is painted on at the back and he wears a black felt skull-cap. This marionette has a mechanism. There are operating strings attached to numerous parts of him, including his head, limbs and shoulders. The feet have been weighted.
