Other Details: A copper medal issued by the City of Newtown to commemorate the sesquicentenary of Victoria in 1984-5. It features the British Royal Coat of Arms and the sesquicentenary logo. Newtown, now a suburb of Greater Geelong, developed rapidly during the gold rush, when a shortage of housing saw the erection of large numbers of pre-fabricated houses. Houses for wealthy citizens were built along the Barwon River. Newton was separated from Geelong when it became a borough in 1858; the City of Newtown was formed in 1967 from the Cities of Newton and Chilwell. In 1993 Newton was re-united with Geelong.
