He married Christina Douglas in 1839, and in 1851-1852 the family made arrangements to emigrate to Port Phillip through the British Colonial Land and Emigration Office. The family was struck by tragedy shortly after arriving, Christina and two of their children, David and John, died within three months of their arrival.
The Mort Estate is Toowoomba's oldest subdivision. It was established in 1862 when Thomas Sutcliffe Mort offered it for sale in 100 allotments.
