Summary
Emu Wines George V commemorative medal, 1935.
This is probably a medal struck in the United Kingdom promoting wine export as much as commemorating the 25th jubilee of the ascension of George V. It emphasized connections to the Empire, bearing both the images of King George and Queen Mary, the royal crest and the inscription 'GOOD FOR YOU / GOOD FOR THE EMPIRE'. Emu Wines was a South Australian company established in the mid-19th century. It made wines, operated a distillery and exported its own and other wines. It was well-known for its sherry. Fifteen years after this medal was issued Emu bought the Houghton winery; in 1976 Thomas Hardy & Sons acquired the stock of the London-based parent company of Emu Wine Co Ltd / Houghton Wines. The medal was used in Export section of 'Sip in Time' wine history exhibition at Museum Victoria when it was located in Swanston Street.
