Significance
The dollar coin was introduced to replace the dollar note in 1987. Originally the plan had been to re-introduce the voyageur design which had been used on the dollar coins since 1935 but the master tools were lost being transferred to the Winnipeg mint. The coin was released on 30 June 1987 and was used in conjunction with the note for two years. The coin gained the nickname loonie from the bird on its reverse and in 2006 the Royal Canadian Mint secured the rights to this name.
