Summary

Copper one Penny mule token minted by W.J. Taylor of London, circa 1860. It was issued in Tasmania, Australia by an unknown trader. It was struck with the die combination of a Taylor Seated Australia form with the word AUSTRALIA on a broad raised rim and a portrait die of Wellington. The Australia form is also found with Hedberg patterns and the Wellington die was found on New Zealand tokens combined with the obverse of Levy Lipman of Wellington.

Andrews notes that this token is probably a "mule of two of Taylor's reverses, but may be a product of his son, who is known to have amused himself producing various irregular pieces while apprenticed in his father' works." He also states that it was exhibited at a meeting of the Royal Numismatic Society on 15th January by Mr. L.G.P. Messenger, as an Australian issue.
