Summary

Brochure issued by the Booth Line (a subsidiary of the Blue Star Line), circa 1950s. It contains advertising material and information about the Amazon Voyage offered by the Shipping Line. It is part of a collection of 175 items of post-war ship memorabilia collected by John McKay. John began collecting shipping brochures as a boy through an interest in travel and later used some of the material in his professional capacity as a Geography and Social Studies teacher. He finally made a voyage himself in 1957-1958, to England to attend a scouting jamboree, although he ended up staying for 18 months. He remembers lots of Australians going over at that time, and references to Earls Court as 'Kangaroo Alley'.

Physical Description

Single page brochure, printed in colour on both sides of the paper and folded twice (in half then half again). On the front cover is a brightly coloured illustrative design which encapsulates the vibrancy of the Amazonian experience. The image is reminiscent of a butterfly but the wings are comprised of smaller pictures of birds, crocodiles and butterflies, the body of the butterfly is the ship and the antennae are two waves/ slip streams created by the ship- all set against a blue coloured (water) background. The back cover consists of a illustrative route map of the voyage through the Amazon. The information provided inside the booklet is a combination of text, black and white photographic images and colour illustrations.
