General Description

Above: black with brown-orange spots and markings; forewing with a single or double white-centred eyespot, hindwing with a single eyespot. Below: forewing similar to above but duller colours; hindwing with two eyes and a large pale orange patch (males) or a white band (females). Wingspan up to 4 cm.

Biology

Orange Alpine Xenica butterflies roost together at night and are most abundant in January and February. Their caterpillars feed on soft grasses (Poa) during the day; when they are older they feed at night.

Distribution

South-eastern mainland Australia.

Habitat

Alpine and sub-alpine eucalypt woodlands.
