General Description
Medium-sized robin. Sexes differ in colour. Adult males: black head, neck and upperparts; white patch on front of head; white markings on wings and edges of tail; scarlet red breast. Adult females: brown head, neck and upper parts with white patch on front of head; orange-red wash across breast. Length 12.5 cm; wingspan 20.5 cm.
Biology
Quiet and unobtrusive birds, usually seen singly or in pairs. They forage near the ground, catching prey by pouncing from a low perch, like a log or low branch. This bird can be confused with the Red-capped Robin, but the Scarlet Robin has white on its forehead and not a red cap. Different species of red-breasted robins are found in different parts of Australia.
Distribution
South-eastern Australia, South-western Australia.
Habitat
Forests and woodlands with open understorey, can be found in urban areas.
