General Description
Colony of individual polyps (hydranths) joined by root-like network of tubular stolons at the base. Colony shape is tree-like or bushy (arborescent). Colour: scarlet, appearing black in deeper waters. Up to 10 cm high.
Biology
Colonies of this species grow in winter months and become fertile late winter. They may live for several years.
Distribution
Worldwide in temperate to tropical seas. Southern Australia.
Habitat
Subtidal, epizoic on bryozoans, ascidians, sponges and other benthic fauna.
