General Description
A medium-sized, stocky parrot. Males have a bright green body, greenish black back and wings with prominent red shoulder patch. Females similar but duller, with no black on the back. Rounded green tail with reddish orange bill. Weight up to 156 g, head-body length 32 cm.
Biology
Nests in tree hollows, about 10 m off the ground. Can be sedentary when conditions are good but large numbers may move around the landscape in search of food and water at times of shortage or drought.
Distribution
Australia and New Guinea. Coastal northern and eastern Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales. Southern New Guinea.
Habitat
Open forests, woodlands, scrubland, mangroves, and wooded waterways. Rarely far from water.
