General Description
Brown or sandy-brown medium-small bird, with dark central streaks throughout feathers. Pale ring around eye, line above eye, and pale underbody. In flight, the rear edge of wing can be seen to have a narrow off-white edge. Length 18 cm with wingspan of 32 cm.
Biology
This skylark dwells mostly on the ground, perching on rocks or low shrubs. It runs and hops over rocks or other obstacles, but will crouch and freeze when alarmed. It is introduced to Australia, but widespread in Europe, northern Asia and northern Africa, and has a sweet and melodious song.
Distribution
South-eastern Australia.
Habitat
Open grassy areas, including pasture or other modified areas such as playing-fields or verges of roads.
