General Description
This quail is a small plump bird with variable plumage. Males are a rich red-brown to grey-brown colour with fine white streaks and barring above and brown below. The bill is a blue grey and the eyes red to yellow. It has orange-yellow legs and feet.
Biology
Nest is a well-hidden shallow scrape in the ground, usually under overhanging vegetation close to water. Both sexes incubate the clutch of 7-10 eggs. Young leave the nest straight after hatching.
Distribution
Australia.
Habitat
Agricultural areas, wetlands and grasslands, amongst bracken and occasionally along roadsides.
