General Description
Variable plumage with upper body and wings blue-grey to dark brown, underparts red-brown with dark streaks. Dark head with buff collar. Square-shaped tail. Young birds with dark brown wings and light brown edges on feathers. Body up to 35 cm long.
Biology
Australian Hobbies catch their food in flight and feed on the wing. They nest in old or commandeered corvid (crow family) or raptor nests, rather than building their own.
Distribution
Mainland Australia and Tasmania.
Habitat
Open wooded areas, cleared forests, wetlands and urban parks with trees.
