General Description
Body very slender, almost cylindrical, with a protruding lower jaw, a large mouth containing fang-like teeth, two widely separated short based triangular dorsal fins, and a short based triangular anal fin. Silvery green above, silver below, fins greenish or pale yellowish-green. Usually 60 cm long head to tail tip (up to 110 cm).
Biology
A cool water barracuda, the Snook is a voracious predator on smaller schooling fishes, roaming far and wide in search of a meal. Usually found near the surface in coastal and offshore waters. This important commercial species is also popular with sports fishers and is considered excellent eating.
Distribution
New Zealand and southern Australia.
Habitat
Inshore surface waters.
