General Description
Body moderately deep, compressed; dorsal fin continuous, long-based with a distinct notch between the spinous and soft portions; lower pectoral-fin rays unbranched and thickened; lips thick and fleshy. Silvery to pale brown with 7-8 broad, reddish-brown to almost black bands on sides, the first 3-4 angled forwards; subsequent bands nearly vertical; fins slightly darker with dark margins. Maximum total length 70 cm.
Biology
A large morwong usually seen around kelp areas on exposed rocky reefs, and abundant on deeper reefs in Tasmania.
Distribution
New Zealand and south-eastern Australia.
Habitat
Rocky reefs, to depth of 50 m.
