Biology
Females of most species of mosquitoes need blood to help their eggs mature. Male mosquitoes do not suck blood, and indeed usually do not feed at all but may sometimes have some nectar. A few Australian species carry diseases, but most that bite humans are just annoying. Other species feed on a variety of other mammals, frogs, reptiles and birds.
Distribution
Worldwide. Mainland Australia and Tasmania.
Habitat
Still water lakes, ponds and puddles.
