General Description
Shell with two halves joined by a hinge. Oval-shaped, coloured black or brown. Shell up to 15 cm across.
Biology
Freshwater Mussels burrow in soft sediments at the bottom of lakes and rivers and feed on organic matter filtered from the water. All of the species in this family live only in the southern hemisphere.
Distribution
Mainland Australia and Tasmania.
Habitat
Billabongs, lakes, streams and lowland rivers.
