General Description

Body flat and black. Wing cases (elytra) are red-orange with ridges from front to back. Antennae long with a line of points (serrations). Mid-body (pronotum) triangular. Body up to 1 cm long.

Biology

Lycid Beetles live on native flowers and plants and are thought to feed on nectar. They are distasteful to birds, so their shape and colouring is mimicked by other beetles and also by some flies, wasps and moths. Larvae live under bark, in soil or leaf litter and are thought to feed on decaying plant matter.

Distribution

Northern and eastern mainland Australia and Tasmania.

Habitat

Woodlands, dry sclerophyll forests and gardens.
