Summary
Bishops whitmorei was one of eight fossils nominated to become Victoria's state fossil emblem in 2021. It was a tiny mammal known only from the Early Cretaceous of Victoria. Its discovery suggests placental mammals were in Australia a lot earlier than previously thought, challenging our understanding of mammal evolution.
