Summary
Though we may think of lions as iconic African species, historically they also inhabited much of southwest Asia and northern India. Today, a small wild population of this Asiatic subspecies survives in Gujarat, India. They can be distinguished from their African relatives by their sparser mane and larger tail tuft.
