Summary
The Guayaquil Squirrel is a tree squirrel that lives in the forests of the lowlands and lower western slopes of the Andes in southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru. This is the area around the Gulf of Guayaquil from which it takes its name.
This specimen was collected in Peru. It was purchased from the French naturalist, explorer and natural history dealer J P Verreaux and registered into the museum's collection in 1867.
Guayaquil Squirrels are common and populations appear to be stable. Though they may be vulnerable to increasing deforestation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers Guayaquil Squirrels to be of Least Concern.
