Summary

This Common Seadragon model was one of four made by Museums Victoria's Preparators in 2007, for the Welcome Map, a massive three-dimensional map of Victoria featuring 56 showcases at the entry to Melbourne Museum. To make the model, Preparators used a specimen from the collection to make a silicon rubber mould. The final model was cast in flexible urethane, with the fins and appendages made from PVC and then painted in Artist oils.

The Common Seadragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) is representative of southern Australia's unique marine fauna, and is the Marine State Faunal Emblem for Victoria.
