Summary
The Pavonine Quetzal lives in northern Amazonia in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Males and females differ slightly in colouration with females being generally less brilliant in colour. This specimen is a male as it has a red and orange bill whereas the bill of the female is grey and black.
Exactly where this specimen came from is unknown, the only known location data is "South America". It was purchased by the Museum from the famous English ornithologist and bird artist John Gould (1804-1881) at some point between 1858 and 1869.
The species is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as being of Least Concern as it has a wide range and apparently large, though patchily distributed, population.
